Brook Luce and Irene Basu Named Rotary Scholars of the Month for February
Rotary Club of the Pelhams recognized Pelham Memorial High School seniors Brooke Luce and Irene Basu as Marilyn Stiefvater scholars of the Month for February.
Brooke Luce, a National Merit Semifinalist, is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Social Studies, English, Mandarin and Science honor societies. Her science research has concentrated on micro-RNA therapeutic for glioblastomas using gelatin nanoparticles avoiding viral delivery systems.She also had an internship studying genetics. She is a member of the Mandarin Club and participates in Varsity track and field. She tutors students preparing for the SAT exam and works with children with special needs (organizing games and activities) and participates in science community outreach events.
Irene Basu, who has earned several science awards, has completed Advanced Placement courses in Statistics, World History, Chemistry, Physics 1 & 2, American History, English Language, Biology, Calculus AB and English Literature. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Social Studies, English and Science honor societies. She has participated in summer research programs on pancreatic cancer after thoracic radiation. Her extracurricular activities include Helping Hands for Hygiene Campaign, Worldwide Club, Medical Career Club, Animal Welfare Club and as the student representative to the school district’s Wellness Committee. She plays clarinet and enjoys Indian Classical Dance.
The local Rotary Club also awards a $15,000 scholarship to a graduating PMHS senior in June. Applications for the scholarship are available through the PMHS Guidance Department.
