By Joyce Farrell
Andrew Pierpont was sworn in as a board member of the Town of Pelham Library by Town Supervisor Dan McLaughlin at the Town of Pelham Board meeting on October 7, 2024.
Councilwoman Kara McLoughlin reported on recent recreation activities for the seniors, which included a pool party at Saxon Woods, a luncheon, arts and crafts, cards, and a trip to Arthur Avenue. Regular programming for Pelham is in full swing, the new pilot program at Hutchinson Elementary School is doing very well and will most likely be added elsewhere in the spring, and there’s more indoor space for pickleball on Saturday mornings in the winter. Registration for that will be limited. Also, basketball registration is open for grades 4-12. The fee is $175.00; however, there is a $10 late fee for those who register after Nov. 1. Visit https://www.pelhamrecreation.com/ to register for pickleball, basketball, and other activities.
Councilwoman McLoughlin also stated that planning is underway for Small Business Saturday on November 30. There will be lots of activities that day, starting with the Half Marathon and 10K, followed by Breakfast With Santa at The Rail House, sponsored by the Pelham Chamber of Commerce, then activities starting at 1:00 p.m. in Gazebo Park and along Fifth Avenue, and concluding with the Town of Pelham Tree Lighting.
Councilwoman Kristen Burke updated the Board on Glover Field. She and Supervisor McLaughlin met with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, school board members, and Lindsey Luft, Pelham Manor’s Village Manager, to continue planning implementations for pedestrian safety at the field’s crossing. She stated that she would reach out to the appropriate members of both the Village of Pelham and the Village of Pelham Manor’s Boards of Trustees to coordinate with them and share the information.
Councilwoman Maura Curtin reminded all that the library has ESL classes for intermediate students every Monday from 6:00-6:45 p.m., 45-minute blocks of help with digitizing photos every Tuesday, and an informal knitting and crocheting group, Fiber Fridays, every Friday from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Also, on K-Day in September, over 119 children received their first library cards.
Supervisor Dan McLaughlin reported to the Board that he spoke with someone from Millennium Strategies, a grant writing service in Rye, about a proposal for Millennium’s services for the Town of Pelham.
Supervisor McLaughlin then proposed a new local law for 2025 regarding the tax cap, Local Law 1, about which there will be a public hearing at the Board’s next meeting on November 4. He then proposed a resolution, which was approved by the Board, appointing Michael Sheehy, Sr. to the Board of Assessment for a temporary, one-year term.
