The Village of Pelham Manor Awarded a $400,000 Grant for a Bio Retention System
by Joyce Farrell
At the beginning of the Village of Pelham Manor’s Board of Trustees meeting on January 13, on behalf of the Board, Mayor Jennifer Monachino Lapey thanked all of the employees in Pelham Manor who kept the Village running throughout the holidays. Trustee Maurice Owen-Michaane then announced that the Village was recently awarded a $400,000 grant, which was written in-house, for a bio-retention system at Esplanade and the corner of Ely Avenue, which will help greatly in the Village’s stormwater mitigation efforts.
Deputy Mayor & Police Commissioner Breda Bennet thanked all who donated to the police department’s Toys for Tots Toy Drive, which was an overwhelming success, making a big difference in the lives of many needy children and families. Trustee and Fire Commissioner Timothy Case echoed her praise and mentioned that the fire department brought toys to five different locations, including soup kitchens and children’s hospitals, and saved some toys in case anyone ever has a fire and there’s a need.
Fire Chief Michael Greco then reported that December was a busy month and included an electrical fire and a boiler fire. The Fire Department also responded to ten motor vehicle accidents, which, as Commissioner Case noted, were mostly in the business area and included at least one pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. He therefore cautioned all to be extra careful crossing the four-lane roadway in that area.
Finally, the Board unanimously voted to refer an application for a site plan amendment from 847 Pelham Parkway (Post Road Plaza), regarding the Michaels store, to the Planning Board.
