What’s Happening at the Pelham Public Library

Adults: Read Books, Win a Prize

Now through Saturday, September 20

Reading contests for children have been a staple of the Library’s Summer Reading program for years. But why let the kids have all the fun? Adults and teens in 9th grade and up can play our Reading BINGO game and enter a raffle to win a brand-new Kindle! You can get instructions and download a BINGO board by clicking here, or stop by the Library reference desk to pick up a form.

Community Yoga

Thurs, August 7, 14, and 21, 11 am-12 pm

Embrace community wellness at our free yoga series with local instructor, Heather Schneider. Adults and teens of all levels are welcome! Come together to discover balance, strength, and peace in a supportive environment. Let’s stretch, breathe, and grow as one community. This program will take place outdoors. Wear comfortable clothing, and bring water and a yoga mat.

Crafty Adults: Miniature Woven Baskets

Monday, August 25, 7:15-8:15 pm

Join our resident artist/instructor Sara Mallach this month as we make whimsical miniature woven baskets. Deceptively simple, these delightful creations will bring a smile to all who see them. This event will take place in-person at the Library and separate registration is required for each attendee. Click here to register. Sign up early, as space and supplies are limited. Arrive on time as late arrivals disrupt the class.

Adult Hybrid Book Clubs

The After-Dark Book Club will meet on Thursday, August 7 to discuss The Extinction of Irena Rey by Jennifer Croft. The 2nd-Friday Book Club will be taking a break for August. Both book clubs are finalizing their schedules for the next season. Books and dates for next season will be posted on our website. To join, email library@pelhamlibrary.org.

Back to School Drive

The library is excited to announce that our library is a drop-off site for NEW school supplies for The Sharing Shelf’s annual effort to provide school supplies to local students! From August 1 through August 21, you can help make a difference for local children in need. The Sharing Shelf is seeking NEW school supplies for students from Pre-K through High School. Each year, they provide 1,500 local Westchester children with a new backpack and grade-appropriate school supplies. Your generous donations will directly support these efforts. A box is located at the Library by the Carrol Place entrance where you can leave your donations.

Astronomy for Kids

Monday and Fridays, August 11, 15, 18, 22 and 25, 3:30-4:30 pm

Blast off into learning with this fun, hands-on astronomy series for ages 8-12. From making a moon phase model (with cookies!) to designing your own planet, each session explores stars, planets, astronauts, and more. Led by Pelham 8th-grade instructor Ahnika, kids will enjoy creative crafts, real NASA videos, and simple science experiments. Registration is suggested, but walk-ins are welcome as long as space and supplies last. Click here to register.

Kids’ Summer Reading Program

From now until our wrap up party on Friday, August 15 featuring the Pelicones Ice Cream Truck.

Join the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Register on their website or come to the Library and they’ll register for you. Read or listen to any book(s) you like and earn points to redeem for the following prizes:

• 60 points or 1 hour = one cookie from Little Bird Cookie Co.

• 180 points or 3 hours = one slice of pizza from Four Corners Pizza

• 300 points or 5 hours = one small ice cream cone from Flour Power

Please note that there is a limit of two prizes per category per reader (total of two cookies, two slices of pizza, and two ice cream cones) this summer. You also have the option of selecting a book to take home and keep in lieu of a food prize. For more information call 914-738-1234 or email Kathy (kpalovick@pelhamlibrary.org).

Dinosaur Scavenger Hunt

Now through Saturday August 30

Uh-oh, some dinosaurs are marching around the Library. Can you find all ten of them? Visit the reference desk to pick up your scavenger hunt sheet any time during the months of July and August. Once you’ve found all of the dinosaurs in the Library, return your sheet to the reference desk for a prize.
