Pelham Partners with Neighbors on Recreation Fair for Students with Disabilities
Last month Pelham and Scarsdale school districts partnered in creating a recreation fair for parents/guardians of students with disabilities that was hosted at Scarsdale High School. Pelham’s Secondary Supervisor of Special Education, Greg Lau, worked closely with his counterpart at Scarsdale and in collaboration with Tuckahoe, Edgemont and Eastchester Schools to organize this event.
Agencies that work in conjunction with the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) discussed recreation opportunities for students with disabilities and how parents/guardians can access their services through OPWDD. Agencies that attended included Heartsong, Able Athletics, Gigi’s House, Stable: Equine Therapy and Learning, SPARC, Miracle League of Westchester, Yes She Can, Aquaabilities and Center for Career Freedom.
These organizations focus on providing students with skills, fun activities, avenues to socialize and meet peers, and overall be a part of their communities in fun and meaningful ways. A huge thank you to Greg for his hard work on this project and we look forward to making this an annual event and next year hosted by Pelham.
