Junior League Marks Earth Month with Hands-On Projects and Community Partnerships in Pelham
The Junior League of Pelham celebrated Earth Month with a series of hands-on, community-driven events aimed at promoting sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community connection.
On Earth Day, April 22, JLP members gathered at Woodland Park for an interactive evening focused on the local ecosystem. Participants toured the native pollinator garden created last fall, observing how native plants support pollinators and contribute to a healthier, more resilient environment.
The group also visited the future site of an upcoming Junior League project—a bioswale and rain garden planned for later this year to help manage stormwater and reduce localized flooding. Attendees learned practical ways to bring sustainable practices into their own yards, from planting native species to improving soil and water management.
The evening concluded with a volunteer service project led by EcoPel’s VineSquad. Volunteers worked together to remove mugwort, a non-native invasive plant species, and plant native milkweed and red chokeberry, helping restore the natural habitat around Woodland Park Playground.
Earlier in the month, on April 10, the Junior League partnered with a local Girl Scout Daisy troop for a youth-focused Earth Month initiative at Woodland Park Playground. League members led first- and second-grader in installing solar-powered lighting along the playground perimeter to improve safety and accessibility. The project included an interactive lesson on solar energy, giving daisies the opportunity to learn about renewable energy before working together to complete the installation. The solar lights were donated by the local Daisy troop.
In conjunction with these efforts, the Junior League of Pelham has also launched a new “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Community Guide, offering practical tips and local resources to help residents make more sustainable choices in their daily lives. The guide is available at https://pelham.jl.org/community/projects/sustainability-resources/pelham-community-recycling-guide/.
Through these initiatives, the Junior League of Pelham promotes civic leadership through hands-on service and community partnerships, helping to build a more sustainable future in Pelham.
