PMHS Seniors Yau Mei Ting and Elliot Levine Named Rotary Scholars of the Month
Rotary Club of the Pelhams recognized PMHS Seniors Yau Mei Ting and Elliot Levine as Marilyn Stiefvater Scholars of the Month for February.
PMHS Principal Sean Llewellyn, a member of Rotary, introduced the two students:
Yau Mei Ting has distinguished herself through her academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and wide-ranging involvement in our school community. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and Math Honor Society, and is a recipient of the PMHS Math Department Smith College Book Award. Yau Mei has demonstrated a deep commitment to scientific inquiry through her four years in our Science Research program, including independent research conducted in collaboration with a professor at Farmingdale State College. Her work has been recognized at multiple science fairs, including a second-place finish in biochemistry at the Somers Science Fair. In addition, Yau
Mei is a member of our FIRST FRC Robotics Team, where she contributes as part of the mechanical team. Beyond academics, Yau Mei is a talented and dedicated athlete. She is a three-year varsity volleyball player, earning All-League Honorable Mention and Section I All Sportsmanship recognition, and she competes extensively in club and beach volleyball, achieving success at regional and national tournaments. She also expresses her creativity through AP Art, developing a portfolio which explores the psychological toll of the education system through symbolism and metaphor. Yau Mei’s leadership and service are evident throughout our community. She is the founder and president of the Stationery Club, serves as vice president of the World Aid Club, and has volunteered as a tutor, coach’s assistant, and science outreach leader for younger students. In her spare time, Yau Mei enjoys films and documentaries, coding, reading scientific journals, art, and collecting stationery tools.
Elliott Levine is an outstanding PMHS student who has excelled both academically and artistically, and who represents our school with distinction in music, athletics, and service. He is a member of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Principal Llewellyn said “He is also one of the best high school violinists I have ever heard. Elliott is a remarkably accomplished musician.” He earned a soloist award at the World Strides Heritage Festival in Nashville, was selected to the All-State Symphonic Band, and named an All-State Orchestra alternate. He is also a two-time Area All-State Orchestra member and a three-time All-County Jazz Band musician. In addition, Elliott performs professionally as a freelance gig musician with The Mellow Fellows. At the same time, Elliott is a dedicated student-athlete and leader. He is a captain of both our varsity cross country and winter/spring track teams, and he previously competed on our junior varsity soccer team. His leadership, work ethic, and sportsmanship are evident in everything he does. Elliott is also deeply committed to service. He tutors through NHS and shares his musical talents by performing violin recitals at local nursing homes and teaching younger students. In his free time, he enjoys running, playing soccer and basketball, playing trumpet (both jazz and classical), and spending time with friends and family.
In addition to recognizing outstanding PMHS students every month during the school year, Rotary Club of the Pelhams awards a $20,000 scholarship in June to a graduating PMHS senior. All PMHS seniors may apply for the scholarship. Applications will be available in the PMHS Guidance Office in the spring.
